महाकाल मंदिर उज्जैन

महामृत्युंजय मंत्र

A single verse (ṛk) of two lines. Metre: Anuṣṭubh. In the Rigveda it is the twelfth and final verse of 7.59; Sanskrit Wikisource's sukta header marks verses 1–11 as addressed to the Maruts and verse 12 to Rudra, calling it the 'mṛtyuvimocanī ṛk' (the verse that releases from death).

आरंभिक दोहे

ritual prefix

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे

oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe

Ritual practice prefixes ॐ, and commonly the Mahavyahritis ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः, before the verse. NOTE: these prefixes are liturgical additions and are NOT part of Rigveda 7.59.12 as transmitted.

We worship Tryambaka, the fragrant one, the increaser of nourishment. As a cucumber is freed from its stalk, so may I be released from death — but not from immortality.
